出生於嘉義縣六腳鄉。師範大學美術系，受教於李石樵、陳慧坤、廖繼春等。大學間連續於三屆省展中得獎。1963年畢業於師範大學美術系。畢業系展榮獲水彩第一名及油畫第二名。
分析立體主義的構圖思維，如人物肖像、桌面靜物等造型的切割與重新組合，成為他畫作中常見的手法。野獸派般的繽紛色彩，配上黯淡的形影，擬造出沉穩、但卻悲壯的氣氛。
在法國取得博士學位、任職巴黎第四大學、擔任法國科學研究中心研究員的侯錦郎在1984年罹患腦瘤，先後經歷兩次手術，身心稍復元後即專心投入繪畫創作。題材圍繞著他自己的身體、家人、花園、家鄉、祖先、神。由於腦瘤使得記憶力及推理能力局部受損，但仍然憑著片段、模糊的印象勾勒出畫面。藉由將日常生活中物件的損壞、改變，嘗試去捕捉物品的內涵，呈現出一個「故事性」的世界。
Born in 1937 in Chiayi County, Taiwan, Hou Ching-Lang went to France to study at L`Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes after beeing graduated from the National Taiwan Normal University. In Paris he received his doctorate degree and became a researcher at Centre National de La Recherche Scientifique in Paris. After two surgeries to remove a brain tumor, he devoted himself to painting, although he had to work with impaired memory and reasoning.
Apollo Art Gallery focuses on the major pieces he made after the operation in the 90s, analysing the interrelationship between“subjectivity in the work”and the subjects like his debilitated body, home, family members, ancestors and gods.
