張萬傳於中學時代即跟隨石川欽一郎習畫。1929年赴日本留學，進入川端畫學校及本鄉繪畫研究所進修。1938年返台後曾參加台陽美術協會，之後退出與陳德旺等組成MOUVE美術家協會。張萬傳曾任教進廈門美術學校及國立藝術專科學校油畫科。

Chang studied painting under Ishikawa Kinichiro while he was in high school, In 1929, he went to Japan to study at the Kawabata Painting Institute and Hongoo Art Insititure. Chang returned to Taiwan in 1938 and joined the Taiyang Fine Arts Association. But a year later he withdrew to from the MOUVE Paint's Association. Chang Taught Western paintings at the Amoy Fine Arts College in China and Taiwan National College of Arts.
