從1985-1990年,連續獲得第一屆至第六屆「文建會年畫徵選首獎」的徐明豐,其藝術表現一向以版畫創作著稱。「國際版畫雙年展」、「全國版畫展」、「全國美展」等全臺最重要的版畫類藝術展覽中,常常得見徐明豐得獎入選的身影,其版畫作品之精采程度不言而喻,深受好評的程度,也於此可見一班。
Between 1985 and 1990, Hsu Ming-Feng has won the first prize for the 1st to 6th Council for Cultural Affairs Print Competition for six consecutive years. Hsu is renowned for his prints and is frequently seen across the most important prints exhibitions in the country, such as the International Biennial Print Exhibit ROC, National Printmaking Exhibition, and National Art Exhibition ROC, proof of Hsu’s acclaimed career as an artist.

然而,若能仔細觀察徐明豐歷來的作品表現,則將不難發現他寄予創作的卻非僅止於年畫或版畫之技巧表現而已,更多的是形而上精神的意涵。對己要求甚嚴的徐明豐,從不因獲獎而滿足,他督促自己幾乎每年都維持有一場以上的個展,為的就是要以個展來發表創作媒材的新試驗,並藉此抒發感懷傳達思維理念。
However, through close inspection of Hsu’s works and his method of expression, viewers will discover that Hsu does not merely seek to excel the techniques of new year prints or prints in general, but more importantly, pursues metaphysical connotations through his art. As someone with strict standards towards himself, Hsu never gains satisfaction through prizes and awards. Hsu pushes himself to arrange at least one solo exhibition each year to display his experiments with new media and to express his ideas and sentiments.

此次2018年徐明豐個展,策展特將展題訂為「川流之魄」,原因是從展出的作品中,我們看到了徐明豐已然跳脫版畫傳統的框架、也越出版畫既定的界限。他在同一幅畫作中融入了各種類別的材料、結合了各種形式的技法,在繁複的創作過程之間,逐漸沉澱累積,繼而畫面蘊生出厚實深邃的精神內涵。
The curation of the 2018 Hsu Ming-Feng solo exhibition is centered around the theme “The Soul Of Stream” The reason for this is this is that we noticed that Hsu Ming-Feng has broken free from traditional frameworks and transcended the limitations of prints. Hsu integrates different materials and creative techniques in a single work, gradually accumulating energy throughout the complicated creative process, finally giving birth to a profound sense of spiritual meaning.

「川流之魄」──川流時空動靜中,凝佇、不安、傾洩,永恆的靈魄,永恆的自由!
“The Soul Of Stream” refers to the halt, restlessness, overflow, and eternal quality of the soul amid the flow of time and space, at ease for all eternity.

喟嘆人之生命何謂?推到極致,人的生命可能被化約到只剩時間與空間的集合。人,總在不斷逝去的時間之中游移,穿梭立身於接連卻相異的空間之中。時間空間疊加交錯,人在其中因此作為一種顯現,然後成為一種存在,而「川流之魄」正表明著人生命的這種存在。
What is the meaning of life? The human life can be seen as nothing more than a collection of time and space. Human beings are constantly moving between the past and present, standing amid time and space that is connected but separate at the same time. Amongst the layering of time and space, human beings are like embodiments, a form of existence. “Movements of the Soul” is a display of the human condition.

空間在「川流之魄」呈現為:是城市,如磚塊一般地構築;是鄉村,如漬痕一般地暈散。不論是城市還是鄉村,都在時間隨動靜川流之中,已然化作窗外景觀式的片段記憶,幕幕斷續飛逝,徒留殘像的斑駁。
The concept of space in “The Soul Of Stream” is portrayed as a city with brick structures; the countryside, spreading outward like a stain. Regardless of the urban or rural scenery, the images have transformed into fragmented memories outside the window amid the fluidity of time, fleeting and leaving splinters of vanishing scenes.

徐明豐嘗試著透過作品想要抓住這些殘留的遺跡,他使盡了諸多可行的方法,甚至突破了限制。印版、塗漆、彩繪…他實驗各式各樣足成創作的可能。作品畫面的顏料色塊,彼此間不見雜亂地相互堆積,層層營造出的爭讓頓挫,就如樂章的和諧旋律,引人沉浸忘返,猶似沐浴詩情的意境之中。
Hsu Ming-Feng attempts to grasp the traces through various methods, breaking through limitations; he has experimented with different creative methods, including printing plates, coating, and paint. The color blocks within the works are arranged in balance, complementing each other while creating depth and layers, just like the harmonious melodies of a musical movement, guiding audiences into poetic imagery.

幽黑,總在作品扮演著關鍵性角色。畫面中,它化身細紋的網格,固定住稍縱即逝的景觀;它大筆觸地揮灑,成為陡峭起伏的山脊綿亙;它是鏽蝕的痕跡,正拓展古老年歲的版圖,吞食好不容易萌興的生機。最後,其他顏色的大面積塗抹,在與幽黑的爭鬥中最後一搏,低彩卻鮮明的色域極盡全力地覆蓋,像極了遠山天空的氤氳壟罩,形成了氣象萬千的遮蔽。遮蔽,反而揭露了背後勢力不甘被掩藏的精彩,被壓抑的背後勢力伺機而動、不斷奮力在罅隙處竄顯,傾洩出人與生俱來找尋出口的生命力。
The color black always plays a vital role throughout Hsu’ works. Black is sometimes transformed into thin grid lines that seem to fix the fleeting images, sometimes applied through carefree brushstrokes to create ongoing and flowing mountaintops, or traces of corrosion, expanding their ancient territory, devouring any sign of life. The other colors seem to be fighting the last battle with the black hue. The low-saturated but vibrant colors strive to cover the composition, resembling the mist in distant skies, forming an ever-changing cover. However, the cover reveals the force lying behind, which does not wish to be concealed, agitating restlessly in their state of suppression as the instinct of liveliness overflows.

喟嘆人之生命何謂?推到極致,人的生命絕非時間空間的集合而已。人之生命應該是時間空間川流之中的靈魄,劃破幽黑的桎梏,不惑於動靜的引誘,穿透洞悉世俗如夢似幻的景觀,在遮蔽與顯露的兩股勢力之間悠然來去。人的生命作為「川流之魄」終將獲致最大的自由,而得以永恆。
What is the meaning of life? The human life is definitely more than a collection of time and space. The human life should be the soul, moving amid time and space, breaking free from the chains of darkness and unmoved by the lure of activity, penetrating the dreamlike scenery of this world and moving at ease between the forces of concealing and revealing. Through becoming “The Soul Of Stream” the human life achieves utmost freedom and eternity.
