In all the temples and monasteries, the four guardian kings are always depicted before one steps into the main alter. They are believed to repel all negative energy and forces. It is believed that the four guardian kings took an oath to protect Buddhism and each one lives in and protects a different direction and so are referred to as the Guardian Kings of the South, North, East and West.
It is the oral stories of Buddha and the four guardian kings, which inspired these pieces.
The Guardian king of the North also known as Viashravana or the wealth deity. He is always depicted with a victory banner in his right hand and a mongoose vomiting a jewel in his left hand. His speech was supposed to be so powerful, that anything he said, even the tiniest utterance could harm others. So Buddha put a most precious jewel in his mouth, so that he could not open his mouth, for the fear of losing the jewel.
