  • 在2012初夏,為了我第一批作品,我從洛杉磯飛到芝加哥。迪士尼在Center on Halsted(伊利諾伊州芝加哥社區中心)展示我的米老鼠作品以及展示我的“ 4DLA”系列中的變裝皇后作品。

    當時,是我首次與迪士尼共同在全國巡迴演出,令人難以置信的激動可想而知。不斷地在城市間移動,從早上在電視上採訪,會議上簽字,在晚宴上發言,這讓我第一次成為眾人關注的焦點。雖然我非常感激這一切,讓我從沒沒無聞成為眾人焦點,但始終有一個點困擾著我並使我心痛。

    我就像每次事件中的一個電燈開關。當被“打開”時,接踵而來藝術、媒體、對話的事件充滿我的生活中。但事件結束後,我就像電燈被“關閉”,感覺被掏空,我獨自忍受大量的工作並安靜地躺在一個我不熟悉的城市飯店裡。

    因此,對於來到芝加哥,我希望情況不會有所不同。我很開心芝加哥的《風城時報》中提到“從洛杉磯發跡的視覺障礙藝術家首次亮相的時代”,那是一篇專屬於我的新聞。我也曾經在等待所有歡呼聲消失的那一刻,我卻還來不及真正體驗這座城市就被帶回家。但這次活動超出了我的預期,我隨著活動非常激動。當事情開始逐漸接近尾聲,我開始準備關閉我的電燈開關。

    直到我聽到我身後傳來驚人且具有渲染性的笑聲,我轉身看到這位驚人的女王裝扮,她的聲音如此迷人,在我的肋骨中振動著。

    我的開關在活動結束後至今都從未熄滅,而在我所有造訪的城市中,芝加哥是第一個吸引我向外出去的城市。我最終像愛麗絲一樣,推開城市的鏡子,翻滾著並在它的夜生活旋轉。 我在閃閃發光的黑暗中像是一個滿眼星光的乘客,在變裝皇后/電子音樂和我聽過最溫暖的笑聲中沉浮。而它是如此的神奇,多年讓我流連不已。柏林,巴黎,並在拉斯維加斯生活了一年……芝加哥,凱特和變裝皇后的回憶,被我拋諸腦後,難怪我為什麼搬到這裡。

    我責怪Kat Sass。

    當我的米奇項目結束時,我決定再次回到繪畫變裝皇后,並決定了變裝皇后領域的社會地域分佈。 Kat Sass是我在芝加哥皇后區的首次採訪。因為她是我在這個城市見過的第一個女王,而且似乎是冥冥中注定。多年來我們的友誼不斷發展,但Kat仍然在我眼中出現了超凡脫俗的感覺……我既緊張又興奮,想要聆聽他們的生活經歷。

    Kat 出生在埃文斯頓(Evanston)時,在她人生的前10年都和父母在歐洲旅行。她的母親是一名走秀模特兒和女演員,而父親是Mikis Theodorakis樂團的天才音樂家/搖滾明星。

    Kat開始了在音樂和藝術領域的旅程,從巴塞羅那,法蘭克福,雅典,那不勒斯等,她最終來到了得克薩斯州。

    環境的改變對Kat來說是一個巨大的挑戰。

    “我在這個新地方,與以前的地方截然不同。突然之間,我變得像怪異的孩子…而我拼命試圖融入其中,但我做不到。我在學校裡尤其受到男孩子很大的欺負,我被同齡人毆打並扔進了儲物櫃。這情況突如其來的發生,讓我感到震驚……我不知道自己做錯了什麼。”

    儘管在新的環境中成長的動盪不安,Kat還是在劇院裡找到了慰藉。

    “我一生都在表演,從小就知道劇院是我的使命。我的母親是我最大的擁護者,堅信“愛每個人-見到每個人”。父親是我最偉大的老師,他教會我“隨時隨地提問和製造事物”。他們讓我成為了表演者,我一直都知道這是我的路,當我有機會表演的時候,我付出了我擁有的一切。”

    最終,Kat最終會在戲劇中成為主角。她以如此年輕年紀,用專注力和對工作奉獻精神,促使她一路過關斬將進入“芝加哥表演藝術學院”,以繼續她的藝術教育。在這裡變裝和劇院伴隨一起。儘管凱特畢業後就與某機構簽約,但她還是決定退出演戲。就在同一時刻,她接到了來自Mid-Tangent Productions(芝加哥LGBTQ劇場)的電話,要求她扮演“ Alex in Wonderland”(愛麗絲夢遊仙境)中的角色

    我接到了他們的電話,他們提到「好吧,這個角色是由一個男人扮演的,但是我想看看你是否有興趣。」“我當然願意擔當”

    當她擔任紅心皇后的演出角色期間,是Kat和我第一次會面。

    從這裡開始,Kat在整個城市開始發光發熱,她的戲劇背景,勤奮的工作心態和發瘋的創意使她獲得了她應得的獎項,尊重和認可。不僅如此,她傑出的個性和藝術天份,以前在得克薩斯州的成長過程中,是被認為蒙羞的…而在芝加哥一次又一次地被表揚。

    這幅畫被稱為“戀愛中的凱特·薩斯/雅典娜”。

    我之所以選擇這個名稱,是因為雅典娜是智慧與戰爭的女神。受到這種拖累經常受到性別和性行為荒謬的過時法律限制。作為一名AFAB女王,不僅僅為了爭取平等機會而進行了長期的艱苦奮鬥。Kat用她的藝術天才奮戰起來,以證明AFAB女王屬於這個世界,而且他們有權表演。

    In the early summer of 2012 I flew from my home in Los Angeles to debut my first collection of work in Chicago. Disney had coordinated with Center on Halsted in showcasing my Mickey Mouse work as well as exhibiting my Los Angeles/San Francisco drag queen work from my “4DLA” collection.

    At the time I was on my first art tour around the country with Disney, which was both incredibly thrilling and at the same time very surreal. It would be the first time that I’d be in the spotlight, running from city to city, doing morning interviews on television, signing at conventions, and speaking at galas. While I was unbelievably grateful to be pulled out of obscurity, there was a tinge of heartache always lingering over me. I was like a light switch with each event, in where I’d ‘turn on’ and the whole world would explode with art, media, and conversation. When each event was over, I’d be left to do nothing but ‘turn off’, and there I would be standing alone in a sea of my work or quietly laying in my hotel room in a city I knew no one in.

    So with Chicago, I expected it to be no different. I was excited about the press I was getting, even including that questionable article in the Windy City Times that said “Visually Handicapped Artist Debuts Work from Los Angeles”. I was also waiting for that moment when all the cheers would die down and I’d be left to head home without really experiencing the city.

    The event went WAY beyond my expectation, and I was incredibly thrilled with the event.. and as things began to wind down, I began to prepare myself for my light switch to turn off. That was… until I heard this amazing infectious laugh bellow out behind me. I turned around to see this amazing queen dressed up as the queen of hearts laughing heartily behind me. Her voice was like this glamorous sonic boom that vibrated in my rib cage.

    I was transfixed.

    “Who… who is that person?” I asked my friend.

    “That's Kat, and she’s incredible.”

    My light switch never turned off that night after the event was over, because in ALL the cities that I had debuted in, Chicago was the FIRST city to ask me out afterwards. I ended up, like Alice.. pushing through the looking glass of the city and tumbled and twirled through its night life. I was a starry eyed passenger floating through the glittering darkness of drag queens, house music, and the warmest laughter I have ever heard in my life. It was so magical, that its bliss haunted me for years. After Berlin, Paris, and living in Las Vegas for a year… the memories of Chicago, Kat, and the drag queens always rested in the back of my head.

    It was no wonder why I moved here.

    I blame Kat Sass.

    When my mickey project was over with, I decided to return back to painting drag queens again, and decided on the socio-geographical idea of Drag Landscapes. Kat Sass was my FIRST interview out of the Chicago queens. I mean, she had to be because she was the first queen I had ever met in the city, and it seemed serendipitous to do so. While our friendship grew over the years, Kat was still this otherworldly being in my eyes… and I was both nervous and excited to listen about their life.

    While Kat was born in Evanston, she spent the first 10 years of her life traveling around Europe with her parents. Her mother was a runway model and actress, and her father was a genius musician/ rockstar with the Mikis Theodorakis Orchestra. From Barcelona, Frankfurt, Athens, Naples, and beyond.. Kat started her life traveling in the realms of music and art. This would ultimately change when the ride changed course, and she ended up in Texas.

    This change of atmosphere would prove to be a great challenge for Kat. Kat would end up vying for the lead roles in the plays that were presented to her. Her unbelievable focus and work horse dedication at such a young age would carry her all the way to the “Chicago College of Performing Arts” to further her education in the arts. It would be here where drag and theatre came together. Despite being signed with an agency the moment she graduated, Kat decided to quit acting. It would be here at the VERY same moment, that she got a call from Mid-Tangent Productions for a role in “Alex in Wonderland”

    “I was in this new place that was so different from where I had previously been. I was suddenly the weird kid who stuck out… and as much as I desperately tried to blend in… I just couldn’t. I was bullied heavily in school, especially by the boys. I was beat up and thrown into lockers by my peers. It was a shock to me why it was happening… I didn’t know what I had done wrong.” Kat, despite the turbulence of growing up in her new surroundings, found solace in the theatre.

    “I have been performing ALL my life, and I’ve known since I was a little kid that theatre was my calling. My mother was my biggest advocate with the firm belief of ‘love everyone - see everyone’ and my father was my greatest teacher who taught me to ‘question everything and MAKE things at all times’. They fine tuned me to be the performer I am today. I always knew it was my path, but when I was given the opportunity to perform, I gave it EVERYTHING I had.”

    “I got the call from them, and they had mentioned ‘well this role was written to be played by a man, but I wanted to see if you were interested’.. and of course I was”.

    It would be here during her drag role as the Queen of Hearts, where Kat and I would first meet strangely enough. From here Kat would explode as a drag tour de force on the various stages all over the city. Her background in theatre, work horse mentality, and her insanely creative ideas has garnered her the awards, respect, and recognition that she so surely deserves. Not only that, but her brilliant personality and artistic genius .. which was so previously shamed in her Texas upbringing… has been celebrated time and time again in Chicago.

    This painting is called “Kat Sass // Athena in Love”.

    I chose this title as Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war. Being that drag is often confined by the ridiculously antiquated laws of gender and sexuality.. being an AFAB queen is nothing short of a long drawn out battle uphill for relevance and equal opportunity. Kat fights tooth and nail with her artistic genius to prove that AFAB queens belong in this world and they have a RIGHT to perform. And while Athena represents war, I see Kat Sass fighting for relevance with the power of love and wisdom. She is a teacher and a mother to a lot of the new queens in this city. She is more than just beauty, wit, and intelligence... as thats just the tip of the iceberg. She is changing the face of what drag is, and opening it past its exclusionary state….
