The victory podium holds a personal connection for me — not because I was ever a winner standing on it, but because I helped design it. At our school, five students who were good at drawing and painting were chosen each year to prepare the podium. Being selected was one of the proudest feelings I’ve had — knowing that so many people would see and stand on
something we created. One of the most common things to include in the podium design was our school motto: Others Before Self. It was always painted boldly across the front. But thinking back now, there’s something quietly ironic about it. The podium is a place where winners are celebrated — where someone is honored for rising above others. And yet, right beneath their feet is a message about putting others first. It’s a funny contradiction — and a poetic one, too.
