Tomoaki Ichikawa, an artist who relentlessly pursues original expression through his paintings and sculptures. His theme is to interpret his daily life experiences and thoughts from his own perspective. He idealizes drawing pictures as casually as eating meals and creating sculptures as naturally as conversing. Ichikawa's art style and themes were formed when he faced the harsh reality in university that his artworks wouldn't instantly sell or receive recognition. He established his theme of creating artworks from everyday life, painting vivid portraits of his pets and carving wooden sculptures of his daughter. His series of kaiju (strange beast) figures was initiated following the Great East Japan Earthquake. His inspirations stem from Western classical paintings, sofubi (soft vinyl) toys, and everyday conversations. His artworks always carry messages and concepts that represent life itself, securing his lived time in some form and conveying the sensation that it's not about winning or losing, but the value lies in oneself.
