Among the world's three major comic traditions (Japanese manga, bande dessinée, and American comics), the prevalence of black-and-white artwork is a distinctive characteristic of Japanese manga.

Japanese manga holds its roots in Katsushika Hokusai's "Hokusai manga" and has evolved from the art of ukiyo-e, drawing inspiration from its use of lines and the aesthetics of negative space.

The term "ukiyo" refers to "this world" or "the world in transition," representing a transient and fleeting existence. "Ukiyo-e" refers to the artistic style developed by Edo period artists, depicting the social and cultural milieu of that time using techniques specific to that era.

Kunihiro Watanabe defines "Contemporary Ukiyo-E" as the portrayal of the modern age utilizing Japanese manga techniques derived from the Edo period.
