    戴坂 (Dai Ban) 出生於日本,在東京武藏野藝術大學獲得雕塑學 士學位; 他在紐約布魯克林生活和實踐藝術,然後搬到馬薩諸 塞州伯克希爾地區,自 1993 年以來一直居住在那裡。

    Born in Japan, Dai Ban received his BFA in sculpture from Musashino Art University in Tokyo; he lived and practiced art in Brooklyn, New York before relocating to the Berkshires region of Massachusetts, where he has resided since 1993.

    In Dai Ban’s work, form is of utmost importance. He utilizes simple tools and materials – a knife or saw, a straightedge, glue, and foam board – to evoke and give shape to unconscious impulses, feelings, and memories. His artistic process is free of conscious deliberation and allows for spontaneity and dynamism in the finished works.

    Each piece is characterized by restraint and subtlety. Dai Ban is attuned to light, color, and form, and will make countless infinitesimal changes to each piece – hundreds of iterations of small strokes of paint, observation in different slants of light, excision of needless details until the three-dimensional canvas is distilled to its purest form. He considers this process to be an intuitive conversation in which the meaning of the piece is not chosen, but created – a generative conversation that includes the observer, inspires them to respond, and makes viewing each piece a collaborative act in which new meanings are formed.
