Lily Prince received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from Bard College. She has participated in numerous artist residencies, has been published widely and her work has been exhibited and collected extensively throughout the United States and abroad. She has been awarded the prestigious Pollock-Krasner grant in painting.
Travel and location are significant to her artistic practice, and Prince is inspired by both the exotic and the familiar. She sketches on-site, in plein air, then transforms these experiences in nature into imaginative paintings, complete with an expressive and vibrant color palette on stark white backgrounds. Detailed brushstrokes and many thin layers of paint allow for rich hues and luminosity.
In a time of societal disillusionment and environmental degradation, Prince finds renewal in the natural world. She feels no obligation toward realism, instead conveying the grandeur of nature through long sinuous lines, ethereal colors, and ravishing patterns. Of her work, Prince has stated, “I consider it a political act to immerse myself in the landscape to record the natural beauty lurking there: perhaps to incite the arousal of sentiment, a stirring of connectedness.” Ultimately, her exaltation of the natural belongs to a long artistic pursuit of trying to capture the sublime and galvanize viewers.
