Putu Sutawijaya born in Tabanan, Bali, in 1971. Putu studied art at Indonesia Institute of Fine Art (ISI) Yogjakarta. He curently lives and works in Yogyakarta and Bali as a painter, sculptor and performance artist. Putu embodies the multi-media, cross disciplinary character of Indonesian contemporary art. For quite some times, Putu Sutawijaya is known through painting works depicting human bodies in gestures of fying or dancing, all with anonymous faces. After that period, Putu Sutawijaya was then Interested to trace back history through the appearances of ancient sites like temples or ancient inscriptions. The exploration also brought Putu to reconsider the relations between history and nature, and how the natural vista and landscape also changed along the transformation of human civilization.
