Toyol Gallery was founded in Hong Kong in 2019 with the mission to champion artists from the New Contemporary Art Movement—a burgeoning and electrifying movement that centres the social and embraces wide-ranging disciplines such as Contemporary Pop, Post-Graffiti, and various Futurisms. Initially promoting established and mid-career artists to collectors across the Asian region and beyond, Toyol also collaborated with fellow galleries in Hong Kong to provide the Movement with a larger public presence. In November 2020, Toyol began a six-month collaboration with SHOUT Art Hub & Gallery, showcasing artists such as Javier Calleja, Chino Lam, and Suzuki Takako in the largest shopping mall in Hong Kong, Harbour City. After which, Toyol capped off this initial phase as a tireless exponent of the Movement by collaborating with Gallery HZ in December 2020. Held in Central, the exhibition “Art Depot” included pieces by Izumi Kato, Kayla Mahaffey, and Max Sansing. Beginning from 2021, Toyol embarked on the next stage of their development by representing and fostering emerging artists from all over the world, particularly throughout Asia. As part of this initiative, Toyol launched its first studio exhibition in their new permanent space in Chai Wan, Hong Kong. Held in June 2022, “Fantastic Fantasy” exhibited pieces from Roby Dwi Antono, Imon Boy, and Chang Teng Yuan, among others. Building on this newfound direction, Toyol participated in Hong Kong’s Affordable Art Fair in August 2022, showcasing artists such as Adinwahyu, Javier Burgos, Demster, and Plumber King. Further cementing its reputation as a proponent for young and upcoming Asian talent in the movement, Toyol focused on three Yogyakarta artists for the “Here and Beyond” Art Showcase at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental in November 2022—Bernandi Desanda, Chrisna Fernand, and Satar Kaldera. At present, Toyol represents artists from Argentina, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong. Seeking to expands its vision and scope, Toyol Gallery will participate in international events to facilitate the growth of its resident artists and to create otherwise inaccesible space for rising talent in the New Contemporary Art Movement.
