    Garden Reverie:Chou Cheng-Liang Solo Exhibition

From an early narrator of urban landscapes to a tender cultivator of mountain gardens realms, Taiwanese contemporary artist Chou Cheng-Liang has, over fifteen years immersed in satoyama life, gently woven a creative dialogue with nature. This exhibition’s landscape series reveals the intimate flora, fruits, and seasonal hues that grace his daily gaze. With brush and ink, he converses with both himself and the enduring spirit of classical literati painting, softly conjuring forests that rise like islands adrift in memory, like pagodas quietly layered and growing—unfolding a realm at once poetic and serene.

Chou masterfully captures those elusive inner visions that hover beyond words, transforming them into profound depths of oil and colored ink. His canvases breathe with tender hues, translucent layers, and misty strokes that blur the line between dream and waking. Rooted in a philosophy of reductionism, he distills nature’s complexity into pure, potent elements. Bold fields of color and simple compositions hold essence intact, inviting viewers on a flowing visual journey—to part the veiling mists, step softly into the woods, and sense the breeze and the hum of insects: a tranquil rhythm where hope glimmers softly beneath the stillness.

Chou’s vision of mountain living is not the lofty seclusion of traditional literati painting, nor a rigid stance in opposition to the city. Instead, it offers a way of life that coexists with the everyday—distant, yet in quiet dialogue. Through this quiet journey from complexity to clarity, Chou Cheng-Liang invites viewers to look anew at everyday life—to reflect on how we might live in balance with nature, and to rekindle a way of being grounded in reverence and shared flourishing. Whether one dwells upon the mountain or below, these layered landscapes offer a resting place for the soul—a space to reflect, again and again, on our enduring connection to the land.

    Chou Cheng-Liang

Born in Taipei in 1969, Chou Cheng-Liang received his BFA from the Department of Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts in 1994, and earned his MFA from the Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts at Tainan National University of the Arts in 2003. His early works often depicted urban landscapes, but a move to the mountainous region of Miaoli marked a profound turning point in his artistic journey. Through oil and ink, he merges the classical aesthetics of Chinese hanging-scroll landscapes with personal memory, transforming scenes where nature and the city converge into a poetic visual language—inviting viewers into a dreamlike, introspective realm.
Chou has received numerous accolades, including the Jury Prize in Drawing at the 11th Taiwan International Biennial of Print and Drawing Exhibition, and the Kuandu Centennial Creation Award from Taipei National University of the Arts, among many others. His works have been exhibited internationally, in countries such as the United States, Korea, and China, and are held in the collections of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the National Museum of History, and various private institutions—affirming his significant presence and influence in the contemporary art scene.
