"LINGKA / PICNIC" by Tenzin Gyurmey Dorjee,is a poignant reflection on the Tibetan diaspora, centered on the cherished memory of Tibetan Children's Village (TCV). For the artist, the annual "Lingka" (picnic) or Athletic Day at TCV was a sacred, communal celebration, often graced by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Returning to TCV, Gyurmey found silence in once-bustling spaces, and a reduced presence of the Dalai Lama. Yet, the students' joy and energy remained undiminished—their cheers louder, their dances more vibrant.
These paintings transcend personal memory, meditating on the changing landscape of the Tibetan community in India. Declining enrollment in Tibetan schools like TCV signals a cultural shift, as families opt for international schools, risking the erosion of shared language and identity. TCV was a vital lifeline, fostering a pan-diasporic identity rooted in Tibetan history and values. As a second-generation refugee, Gyurmey urgently documents these spaces, exploring how traditions endure or fade amid displacement. "Lingka" captures the intergenerational tension and tenderness—elders bearing exile's grief, youth inheriting dreams yet distant from their homeland.
TCV stands as a unique model of education rooted in compassion and cultural survival. As such schools shrink, we risk losing not just learning centers, but vessels of living heritage. Through these works, Gyurmey prompts reflection on what we preserve, what we let go of, and what belonging truly means when homeland exists largely in memory.
