Artist Crystal Lupa presents a group of works inspired by her recent trip to north Africa, with the images of fountains, cactuses and desert set in poetic and dream-like scenes. Cartoon characters and toys such as unicorns and Barbies indicate the artist’s identify as a parent and the rich symbolism within the compositions narrate the multiple sides of the artist and the relationship she maintains with her inner-self.
The dotted bleaching of the paints is applied on the stars, coins, flowers and light, whilst the organic waved brush strokes create ribbon-like textures on fountains, fire, hair, rock formation and ore. The inter-racial and procreation metaphors are often practiced by the artist as the method to materialise one’s inner space, as a form of exploring one’s emotions, traumas and collective unconscious. The theatrical compositions provide the viewers the opportunity to interact with the narratives. Taking inspirations from personal experiences, the artist builds a mysterious world with nuanced boundaries between reality and dreams that explores one’s psychological states.
