Simple lines conjure the shape of a vase carrying chrysanthemums in a calm yet forlorn setting. One of his works from the "pink period," this painting testifies Sanyu' s adroit contrast of the dark vase and pink petals, allowing visual fun to simmer in a still life. With the depiction of a green tabletop, Sanyu creates a sense of space in what could be seen as an experimental approach to Western perspective painting.
