菊花是最常出現在常玉作品中的主題，菊辦的雕球，與葉片，枝枒相映成趣，單色背景與盆器更襯托菊的雅致。此畫作於1930-1940年代，這時期多用黑，白，粉紅作為畫面主要色調，故稱「粉色時期」。
The chrysanthemum is a recurring motif in Sanyu's work. Careful brushstrokes bring out the delicate petals, leaves, and branches in a felicitous composition, against a monochrome background and vessel. This work was made between the 1930s and 1940s, distinguished by Sanyu's primary palette of black, white, and pink, hence known as the "pink period."
