Born in New Taipei City in 1972, Yung-Yen TSUI is a multidisciplinary artist who spans the fields of painting, sculpture, and public art. She is also one of the few female artists in Taiwan who excels in metal sculpture. In 2006, TSUI was commissioned by the National Palace Museum in Taipei for the “Old Is New” project. Through researching historical records, she attempted to integrate the museum‘s collection of artifacts with related historical contexts. From the traditional acrobatic figure, she created the foundational material for the fictitious “The Circus of Den-Den-Ciao-Jean”. This led to the development of series such as “The Silent Show” (2008-2014), “Monument of Solitude” (2014-2020),“Shallow” (2020), “So What If” (2021), and “To the Moon” (2022). These works present her observations on human nature, society, and ecology, as well as insights from her own life experiences, using a consistent expression that is humorous, witty, and self-deprecating. They reflect her response to external environmental changes and internal transformations, translating them into the aesthetic realm of contemporary sculpture.
