Today we take you to meet a seasoned calligrapher named Shih Chun-mao, who has been practicing calligraphy for over 40 years. Many calligraphers offer classes from their studio, but Shih has even taught classes at the Presidential Office. In the upcoming months he’ll be exhibiting his boundary-breaking works in Paris. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to Shih to find out more.
For over 40 years, Shih has actively promoted calligraphy. He is a master calligrapher excelling in all types of scripts in the Chinese calligraphy tradition: seal script, cursive script, regular script, running script, and more.
This work was inspired by the flowers near his studio. Instead of writing with black ink, he added color, transforming the assembled characters into a painting.

In ancient times, Chinese characters were written with black ink on white paper. I hope to add a little color to the original characters to make the calligraphy more colorful. The lower left space is written in official script and the lower right is written in running script. I have been taking part in calligraphy education for 40 or 50 years, since 1960. In addition to writing calligraphy myself, I also want to pass on what I have learned to the next generation. I hope to promote our Chinese calligraphy art to the world.
Shih has been practicing calligraphy for over 40 years. Aside from teaching classes in his studio, he has even taught classes at the Presidential Office.
This work was inspired by rock paper scissors. It’s another example of how he innovates by combining traditional calligraphy and philosophy with western painting, which he studied when he was younger.

This work is about rock paper scissors, which we played as children. Although it is a game, it can also describe life, because just like rock paper scissors, there are losses and victories in life. There are many things that can be let go. These are five fingers, scissors, and the stone is round like a fist. Because I am exhibiting in Paris, I didn’t want to show traditional calligraphy works. Instead the works must hold resonance, in form or content, under both Western and Eastern art traditions, so I’ve been trying to create this kind of work recently.
Shih will be exhibiting 41 scrolls at the Galerie Librairie Impressions in Paris from Nov. 13 to Dec. 7. The exhibition will be split into three themes, presenting works of art that are approachable even to those unfamiliar with Chinese characters.
