Taipei Artist Village selects more than ten Taiwanese artists to participate in the three-month residency abroad in organizations worldwide every year. In 2020, Barry Room starts from the perspective of “Travel Literature”, organizing Artists Exchange Group Exhibition throughout the year. Following Homeric epic “The Odyssey”, artists provide retransmission of experience and thoughts in the narrative line that grows between “travel” and “back home”. The exchange organizations of artist village span across Asia, Europe, Oceania, and other countries. This year, the exhibition will be divided based on geographical areas, showing the projects and works inspired by local history, culture, geography. Besides bringing a complete end to the entire residential creative journey, the exhibition also creates multiple paragraphs of traveling journal to viewers in their process of visiting.

In Search of the Path to Breathe invites Wei Hsinyen, who visited Gwangju Museum of Art in 2019, and Liao Xuanzhen and Huang Ichieh, who participated in the MMCA Residency Goyang. Wei’s work is an extension of Walk with Me, a project that stretches between Taiwan and Japan. Wei met different people in Gwangju, the holy land of democracy, and explores the city with a brand new perspective through the act of walking. The work of Liao and Huang is inspired by the tension-filled relationship between South and North Korea; the two set off on their journeys on the same day and made an appointment to meet at the 38th Parallel.

The invitation to take a walk together is an initiative, walking is a physical action, and exchange and interaction is a natural result. The exhibits are like segments that are extracted from the walk, separating every mutual gaze, smile, thought, narration, and pause. Each of them becomes a blunt knife, slow slicing downward into a cake, segmenting and sharing a piece of self. The exclusivity of Walk with Me makes the project seem like intimate time together, but every time the Gwangju Uprising is mentioned, it is as if the windows are suddenly covered with a film of steam: the outer appearances of objects are visible, but the details and deeper emotional turmoil are not. However, walking still involves a certain intimacy; when the breathing and footsteps of two individuals sync, certain personal memories emerge and end up in the display space. Viewers who visit the exhibition will follow the artist into a particular time and scene of Gwangju, advancing with lighthearted steps.

Calmness is a collaboration between Liao Xuanzhen and Huang Ichieh while the two artists participated in a residency in South Korea. Liao and Huang started with their relationship and the broken relationship between South and North Korea. The two artists embarked on separate journeys, each collect, gather, and discard trying to reunite at the end of the journey. North Korea is clouded with a veil of Socialist mysteriousness. Throughout recent years, there are more and more ways entering North Korea, but the sights and experiences are all prearranged and curated. The entire encounter resembles the uncovering of a veil but never exposing the truth, never receiving the breath of air. South Korea, on the other hand, is influenced by the past politics of Japan; the resentment towards warfare and innocent sacrifices can never be washed clean, never achieving “freedom from fear.” With the narrative of the two-channel video, the footsteps of the two artists move closer, expecting to reunite in the “Freedom House”. However, they are still limited by the guarded tension of the Demilitarized Zone.

Exhibition In Search of the Path to Breathe will be displayed between July 31st and August 30th at Taipei Artist Village. Led by Wei Hsinyen and art group Liao Xuanzhen and Huang Ichieh, viewers will set off, each with different steps and paces, in search of a path of breath that allows collective freedom.
