Robert Huang’s Art Chronology
Huang Teng-Hui (Robert Huang, born on December 5th of 1959), is an artist that grew up under the starry skies of the Hualien-Taitung Valley, with sixty years of experience in art creation riding on his dreams. After graduating from Tunghai University, Huang went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts from Tsinghua University in Beijing, and became a Doctoral Candidate in Fine Arts. In practicing his dreams of creating art, Huang became involved in three different fields related to the intrinsic qualities of “beauty.” The first was developed during the 1980s, when he and his senior from the Department of Architecture founded the “Utopia” in Taichung, a community revitalization project focused on transforming a tired and shabby community of unfinished buildings into a community with aesthetic elegance. The project paved the trend towards the integration of residential spaces and living aesthetics, building the foundations to his comprehensive exploration of aesthetics. The second took place in 1990, when Huang founded the first rose-themed British afternoon teahouse, called the “Rose House.” It later became an iconic Taiwanese brand in the cultural and creative industry, as well as the food service industry. His creative talent was further exhibited in stylistic designs, as Huang became the first Chinese artist whose artworks were featured on the covers of international VISA and JCB credit cards. He had also made designs for the royal British porcelain brand, including pieces on commemorating Prince William’s royal wedding, and so on, all of which widely collected by numerous collectors around the world. The third came about from the 1990s, when Huang subsequently became actively dedicated to creating paintings. His distinctive style possesses unique aesthetic images and visual languages.
Throughout more than thirty years of dedication in art creations, Huang was influenced by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Willem de Kooning, Ryuzaburo Umehara, and Liao Ji-Chun, demonstrating artworks from the artistic perspectives of Fauvism and Expressionism. Having taken to the rose that represented true love in the novel Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince), written by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, Huang once said, “in my lifetime of art creations, all I ever wanted was to depict the rose within my heart and the Little Prince’s philosophy of life.” Huang’s artworks contain four main themes, the first three being portraits, the series of paintings on roses, and landscape paintings. These three belong to the realm of objective abstract paintings, constructing aesthetic sceneries in the world of perception. The fourth is nonobjective abstract paintings, such as the cosmos and stardusts, dazzling yet mysterious. The development process of these four themes may explain how the aesthetic exploration in Huang’s artworks started from poetic conception to picturesque conception, then to artistic conception, and finally transcended to aesthetic ideals brimming with poetic elegance.
Robert Huang uses his art creations to convey his sincerity as an artist. His persistence in the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty is demonstrated in his unique aesthetic characteristics. His colorful poetic conception is a rose garden with no fence. Like Saint-Exupéry’s Little Prince, Huang travels alone on his artistic journey, waiting for us to share his dreams, and in turn pursue our own dreams.
