Ciou Bo-Kai, born in 1997, graduated from the Department of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy at National Taiwan University of Arts in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree. In 2023, he completed his master’s degree in the same department at National Taiwan University of Arts. His primary mediums of artistic creation include ink and Eastern gouache, focusing on the types and themes of Eastern painting.
During his undergraduate years, Chiu mainly engaged in ink painting on paper, presenting works in black and white monochrome ink. In his master’s program, he explored Eastern gouache painting, with heavy color application becoming a primary expressive technique. Currently, he reflects on the formal spirit of Chinese art, understanding that it has been shaped by distinct benchmarks and criteria due to historical context and cultural thinking. Guided by strong and unshakable cultural perspectives, these established ways of thinking inevitably become challenges that artists must confront in their creations. Questions such as why paint mountains, why depict water, and how to reinterpret one’s personal interpretation of mountains and water become ongoing subjects for artistic exploration and breakthrough.
Ciou Bo-Kai’s works primarily feature landscape depictions, departing from the humanistic ambiance of classical landscapes and imbuing a sense of fantasy. The artist breaks free from traditional frameworks, offering a reinterpretation of landscape with a unique style through personal arrangements and combinations. Within the artist’s space, elements such as houses, streets, and mythical creatures are integrated, reflecting a sense of oppression experienced in the urban jungle. Simultaneously, the artworks express a yearning for the tranquility of natural mountains and forests, aspiring to an ideal and desire for harmonious coexistence with nature. The artist aims to inject “realistic scenery" and “everyday perceptions" into classical art, extending a fresh and alternative definition of landscapes with an entirely new appearance.
