This painting may seem rather gruesome, but it is to be understood as a metaphor, and indeed Vajrayana buddhism describes the realms of hell to be equally gruesome. This painting is my reflections on the practice of eating meat, which is very much ingrained in our society but on the other hand also a very dreadful practice if you think about it in a certain way. It means that we are ending the lives of other beings for our nourishment and pleasure. This painting depicts people being cooked in a trditional hot pot. This is the kind of divine justice those who commit sins are said to be meted out in the realms of hell- perhaps that realm is a place in our mind, and the punishments we suffer are a result of our own sense of right and wrong. This painting is an attempt to get people to think of how gruesome the act of eating flesh is if you consider it in a certain way. As someone who eats meat myself, this is not a judgement of people who do so, but just something that I think about .
