When I was painting this piece, I was motivated by the idea of a world without borders- in every sense of the word. By borders, I was thinking of not just land borders between countries, but also the many ways in which the various inhabitants of the world are separated from one another- by lack of empathy for one another and for our different conditions, the gulf between the humans and other animals and plants, and all the ways in which we separate ourselves from others. This painting represents my dream of a world where all these boundaries we have placed between one another is burned away. I did not offer up this explanation when this work was displayed at various exhibitions, and many people have come up to me with their own interpretation of the work. They include pessimistic views such as that that the world is burning due to our recklessness. This could be climate change depicted as art, or war, or any other wrong that is happening in the world. I am happy that so many people have their own interpretations and I would not say any of them are wrong- a painting is a mirror for the viewers to examine their own thoughts and ideas.
