This is an interpretation of the backbone of Buddhist teaching, which says that true happiness comes from within. This is not as simplistic as saying we can make ourselves happy, but the profound recognition that while we all seek happiness, we seek it outside in the material world, represented by the four circles of material elements. True happiness comes from understanding the meaninglessness of the material world, and awakening the Buddha within.
