The first image in this painting that the viewer would see is that of a wrathful deity. In Buddhism, these wrathful, often terrifying figures are not evil or demons, but a manifestation of the Buddha. The form of the Buddha is superimposed on to the wrathful face, to illuminate this supposed contradiction which has a teaching. The wrathful aspect of the deity represents the great amount of energy and power required to vanquish ignorance, desire, and hatred, and pave the path for enlightenment.
