Remembrances of the Mind – Chiang, Han-Tung Wood-Cut Solo Exhibition
In 1905, “Die Brücke”(The Bridge), a group of expressionist artists, was formed in Dresden, Germany. Two of the founding members, E. Heckel and E.L. Kirchner, would lay the foundation for expressionism with their wood cut works. In 1956, Jiang Han-Tung, Song Qin, Lee Shi-Chi, amongst other artists, established the Modern Printmaking Association in Taiwan. In doing so, they led the way for experimentation and studies in the medium. In a period when cultural literacy was still lacking in the region, Jiang succeeded in insisting on and establishing his own distinctive styles and methods of expression.
Jiang’s works have been selected for notable exhibitions internationally, including the São Paulo Biennial and the San Francisco International Printmaking Exhibition. In 1983, Jiang held his first solo exhibition with Apollo Art Gallery. He again collaborated with Apollo Art Gallery in 1992 when the gallery organised an exhibition for his works, sponsored by the Taiwan Ministry of Culture, at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. More than 400 guests attended the opening of the exhibition, where they were delighted by Jiang’s works and simultaneously gaining a closer understanding of Taiwanese modern art.
Artist Li Zhong-Sheng once used “remembrances of the mind” to describe Jiang’s works, pointing out the abundances of colour and elements of innocence in his works that combine to illustrate a sense of surrealism. As such, Apollo Art Gallery has decided to name this exhibition “Remembrances of the Mind” and will feature 20 of Jiang’s wood-cut works from the 1960s to 1980s. We would like to sincerely welcome you to visit the exhibition!
