Reflecting on the Past and Present: Navigating the Tapestry of Folk Religion Culture Through Generational Dialogues
With a 300-year history of county-building, Changhua proudly boasts traditional artisans renowned throughout Taiwan and a rich cultural heritage. In an era where modern arts and cultural facilities have yet to emerge, temples serve as sanctuaries for both faith and art. As we celebrate the tricentennial of the county's founding, The Art of Folk Religion exhibition vividly reflects the cultural spirit of the ages, embodying a contemporary perspective on the enduring human essence throughout the centuries.
Established in 1723 (the first year of the Yongzheng era) by the Qing court due to an increasing number of immigrants, Changhua County became the oldest county seat in Taiwan's history. Immigrants from Fujian and Guangdong integrated traditional Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist beliefs, creating a temple culture that harmoniously accommodates diverse cultural elements. The significance of the county's 300-year history is profound, with traditional temples carrying the cultural splendor of these years. This exhibition, in its innovative approach, brings temples into art museums and leads viewers from the temples that surround their daily lives through a 21st-century interpretation, introducing the vitality of traditional craftsmanship and cultural creativity, sparking a new era in Changhua's historical legacy.
The exhibition titled "All the Immortals Paying Tribute to Gods – The Art of Folk Religion” unfolds along the timeline of "Present - Past - Future." It commences with the works of our esteemed local "Living National Treasures," recipients of the "National Heritage Award," and custodians of traditional crafts and intangible cultural assets. The exhibition delves into the beauty and significance of traditional folk religion culture through temple heritage and artifacts. Contrasting with artwork from different generations, it presents the devout beliefs, worship rituals, and festive ceremonies of local culture in ordinary life, while tracing the evolution of the art of folk religion. In the age of AI, the exhibition uniquely incorporates performances and interactive designs using AR/AI digital technology, enabling the audience to engage in a virtual dialogue between past and present, discovering the infinite charm of the art of folk religion.
The exhibition is divided into three main themes: "Ancient Arts in Modern Times - Aesthetic Interpretation of Folk Religion," "Exploring the County's History - Cultural Context of Temple Artifacts," and "The Place of Praying - Perspectives of Generational Change from the Common People." Emphasizing the artistic forms developed by folk religion, the exhibition highlights the continuous interplay between tradition and contemporary expression. This fusion of old and new mirrors the characteristics of artistic development and common culture across time, revealing the inseparable connection between folk religion and our daily lives. The 300-year history of the art of folk religion serves as the cornerstone of Taiwan's artistic culture, flourishing in Changhua, inviting everyone to savor and experience its richness.
