Step into the historical enclave of 321 Arts Village, where once stood military officer dormitories from the Japanese colonial era, later repurposed as residences for Cheng Kung University's professors. Despite historical portrayals centering on male figures, it was often the unseen labor of women that sustained these households.
Our exhibition showcases the works of two female artists, shedding light on the hidden narratives of women's labor. Cambodian artist Hul Kanha's “One Hundred Hands” and "Values" series capture the essence of her hometown in Siem Reap and Bunong Village in the Mondulkiri province, using women’s traditional sarong skirts as symbols of personal identity. Taiwanese artist Phebea Shen collects surplus yarn from others' homes, weaving them into objects brimming with new life under the theme "What You Don't Need is Exactly What I Need," encapsulating the personal stories of the yarn owners and the artist's own life experiences.
In this domain of women, where labor becomes an act of creation and transmission of value, the exhibition transcends the physical confines of renovated homes. It becomes a celebration of resilience and empowerment, a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy left by these unseen heroines. Join us on this transformative journey as we unveil these remarkable women's vibrant lives and untold tales, reigniting their presence within the cherished confines of 321 Arts Village.
