    HO Kan x LEE Kuang-Yu

Chini Gallery is delighted to present a duo exhibition featuring Taiwan’s renowned artists, Ho Kan and Lee Kuang-Yu, at the 2019 Art Taipei. Whereas the former is celebrated for his abstract art in the Asian art scene, the latter is a well-known contemporary sculptor from Taiwan. In recent years, the two artists have been active in Taiwan’s and international art scene. In 2017, Lee was invited to present a solo exhibition, To Have and Have Not, at the San Marino Pavilion in the 57th Venice Biennale. In 2018, Ho Kan also presented a large-scale retrospective, Beyond Shapes and Colors, at the Villa Reale of Monza in Milan, Italy. The duo exhibition at this year’s Art Taipei will comprehensively display the latest creative style and works by these two eminent artists.

This time, Lee will show his latest Cat Series, which is a more comprehensive combination of the artist’s signature “openwork technique” and “sheet-metal structure,” demonstrating a creative form reminiscent of Cubism. By first breaking and taking his subject matter apart before deconstructing and reconstructing its image, the artist eliminates the sense of volume characterizing traditional sculpture. The forms of cats are simplified down to structures outlined and delineated with sheet-metal and openwork. Furthermore, the turning and pausing of the rhythmic contour vividly portrays the movements, expressions and gestures of different cats. Whether lying down, walking or standing up, Lee uses simple the elements of line and plane to create three-dimensionality in a lyrical manner, elegantly and precisely capturing the bearings and postures of the cats while revealing a clever interplay of the real and the void in the sculptural space. Amidst alternating contour and space, the artist adds more imagination to sculptural form, demonstrating his mature skills in mastering the art of sculpture.

The exhibition shows Ho Kan’s oil paintings created in recent years. Different from his earlier works known for a profoundly mysterious color and imagery, Ho’s recent works reveal a brighter and livelier air through his use of contrast that builds a harmonious and unifying visuality. Ho uses simple lines and geometric symbols to enrich the composition, using dynamic spiral and depth created with perspective to unfold multiple three-dimensional spaces in two-dimensional planes. His creative approach also becomes more unrestrained, with a more colorful palette and lighter forms, unveiling a much purer composition while manifesting vibrancy in compact images. In the history of Asian abstract art, Ho is a trailblazer, who has insisted in his innovative approach to abstract expression. Combining geometric shapes and color blocks, he experiments with all the possibilities of the nature of painting, building his unique aesthetics of Eastern geometric abstract. Furthermore, the exhibition also features Ho’s pencil drawings and ink paintings, which are rarely shown in public.

In this year’s Art Taipei, Chini Gallery is pleased to present the latest works by Lee Kuang-Yu and Ho Kan, who have been active and well-received for their mature, well-rounded and magnificent art. The new works exhibited this year materialize the artists’ refined techniques as well as their steadfast endeavors and perseverance in art-making, which have enabled them to continuously shape the future of Asian contemporary art. With this duo exhibition, Chini Gallery hopes to provide a window to art enthusiasts in Taiwan and abroad to understand Taiwan’s sculpture and abstract art as well as our artists’ remarkable artistic genius. Through the platform of Art Taipei, the gallery once again engages the international audience and invites all to witness Taiwan’s soft power.

Drawing inspiration from the image of “the tiger-taming Luohan” in Eastern culture, the artist employs calligraphic line to create a sense of vivid movement with his signature sheet structure, demonstrating the power in the fighter’s action as well as the subdued tiger. Depicting the dramatic and intense scene, the work shows the fighter’s vigorous energy and bravery through his success of overcoming a beast. As much as this work illustrates the fearlessness in facing adversity, it is also a metaphor for conquering one’s limit to transcend the beguiling greed, anger and ignorance in one’s mind. It is the debut of this artwork at Art Taipei.
