KAO, An-Bo currently resides in Danshui and graduated from the Master's program in Fine Arts at National Taipei University of the Arts. Growing up amidst mountainous forests, he captures the transient world through the interchange and interweaving of roles with landscapes. He describes the spirituality and essence of Taiwan's mountains using the expressive nature of ink and the purity of ink. He conducts on-site creations in mountain forests reached through mountaineering, blending different types of ink and soil to explore the possibilities of pure ink and natural creation. For him, nature is the most ideal studio. Visualizing the inner world of mountains is an ongoing pursuit for Kao Anbo. Currently, he works as an ink artist and art teacher. He was selected as a long-term resident artist at the Art Site of Railway Warehouse Hsinchu City for 2023, undertaking a one-year mountain creation project in Hsinchu. In 2024, he went to Tainan's Absence space for a residency, studying the landscapes created by Taiwanese ink landscape and natural co-creation through mountain and sea painting with the body. His works and exhibitions have been sponsored by various organizations, including the Ministry of Culture, National Culture and Arts Foundation, Hsinchu City Cultural Affairs Bureau, Tainan City Cultural Affairs Bureau, Huang Junbi Art Scholarship Cultural & Educational Foundation, Zhang Guang-bin Ink Award Scholarship, Accton Arts Foundation, and have been exhibited at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei.
I often find myself in the misty forest, collecting the souls born from the interaction of mountains and clouds. As I trace my path, I can distinctly perceive the gaps and intertwining between plants in the forest. Sometimes, the landscape seems fragmented due to the division of trees, especially noticeable when fog descends. At such times, the attempt of external light to penetrate through the forest and fog barrier is most apparent. It's as if the light is devouring the forest, or the forest is engulfing the light.
In my depiction of the clouds and mist, I portray the mist as menacing, resembling the marks left by insects devouring foliage. This reflects the intertwining struggle between the forest, light, and clouds in the mountains, a battle between nature's yin and yang. It can also be seen as an infinite shift in perspective amidst the foggy mountains.
When a mountain is shrouded in clouds, outsiders only see the peaks concealed by mountain mist. At such times, I find myself nestled within the mountains, within the clouds, gradually permeating into the mountain itself. I attempt to allow the mountain's interior to permeate its exterior, sharing with others the self and process engulfed by mist while nestled in the clouds. It's also a manifestation of the various forms in which nature resides within mountains, and the dense clouds and mist in the painting become a camouflage for the unseen, a reversal of visibility in the passage through the maze-like misty forest, a penetration of the mysterious, misty forest.
