京口地區自古代即於政治、歷史因素下，奠基豐厚的文化資源，在隱逸思想與周圍畫派的交流刺激下，遂形成橫越十七世紀中至十九世紀中葉活躍於京江地區（即今日鎮江）的特色繪畫流派——京江畫派。

過去學界所知的清代畫史，多以正統派為主要面向。而受西方思潮影響的現代中國，如康有為、徐悲鴻、陳獨秀則開始否定近世繪畫，甚者認為十九世紀後中國繪畫的創造力已然耗盡。實際上，十九世紀其實並非衰落的百年，而是中國審美觀念和時代風格再次轉變的關鍵時期。

隨著近年研究面向的寬廣，越顯出清代畫壇的「變動」特性。京江畫派以明代吳門為學習對象，另闢蹊徑，不落傳統派窠臼而能自出機杼，反映出了不同於正統畫風的審美觀，因此被譽為是中國古典繪畫時代最後的山水畫派，為此段歷史另立標誌性的一頁。

Years of political and historical influences established rich cultural resources in the Jingkou area, whilst the combination of seclusion philosophy and the impacts from nearby artistic schools led to the unique style of the Jinjiang School which dominated the Jingjing area (modern day Zhenjiang) from mid-seventeenth century to mid-nineteenth century.

The Qing dynasty painting history known to the academic world was largely conservative. The modern pioneers such as Kang Youwei, Xu Beihong and Chen Du-Xiu had begun denying modern painting, claiming that the art in China after the nineteenth-century had lost its creativities. As a matter of fact, the nineteenth-century is not the decline of Chinese art, but the key turing point for Chinese aesthetics and style.

The fluidity of Qing dynasty art surfaced with recent studies. The Jingjian School takes inspirations from the Wu School from the Ming dynasty and recreated innovative styles that is unique to their own. The Jingjiang School breaks free from conservative aesthetics and has become known as the last landscape school of the Chinese classical paintings, writing an important page in Chinese art history.
