In all the temples and monasteries, the four guardian kings are always depicted before one steps into the main alter. They are believed to repel all negative energy and forces. It is believed that the four guardian kings took an oath to protect Buddhism and each one lives in and protects a different direction and so are referred to as the Guardian Kings of the South, North, East and West.
It is the oral stories of Buddha and the four guardian kings, which inspired these pieces.
“Touch” The Guardian King of the South also known as Virudhaka is supposed to be the fiercest looking, with fangs and other formidable elements. He is always the most heavily armored and depicted in the blue color. It is said he had the most powerful touch. Even a slight touch from his hand could kill a being. Buddha gave him a magnificent sword, so that his hands became preoccupied with measuring the sword, and in this way, he no longer harmed anyone with his touch.
