In all the temples and monasteries, the four guardian kings are always depicted before one steps into the main alter. They are believed to repel all negative energy and forces. It is believed that the four guardian kings took an oath to protect Buddhism and each one lives in and protects a different direction and so are referred to as the Guardian Kings of the South, North, East and West.
It is the oral stories of Buddha and the four guardian kings, which inspired these pieces.
The Guardian King of the East is also known as Dhritarashtra is depicted in white color and always carries a traditional guitar. It is believed he had extremely sensitive and powerful hearing, and when he heard the smallest negative comments or utterances, from far away, the being who uttered those words would immedialtey die. Buddha then gave him a dramynen (traditional guitar) so that the king would play the most beautiful melodies and music, to occupy his hearing, and stop his powers to harm others.
