In all the temples and monasteries, the four guardian kings are always depicted before one steps into the main alter. They are believed to repel all negative energy and forces. It is believed that the four guardian kings took an oath to protect Buddhism and each one lives in and protects a different direction and so are referred to as the Guardian Kings of the South, North, East and West.
It is the oral stories of Buddha and the four guardian kings, which inspired these pieces.
The Guardian King of the West is also known as the king of the nagas (the snakes) or Virupaksha. He is always depicted with a snake in his right hand and is always red in color. It is said that he had the most powerful sight, so that if he saw anyone doing even the smallest negative action, they would die. Buddha gave him a small stupa, which he carries in his left hand, which is supposed to show the most magical sights. In this way, his sight is preoccupied with this stupa, and thus, he does not harm anyone with his powers.
