The Existence— Shuo Feng Solo Show

This autumn on October, from 22nd to the end of the month,  Z+1 Gallery is very fortunate to collaborate with HengShan HOUSE in Shanghai to launch Shuo Feng Solo Show ‘Existence’, thank you for your support and participation of the show. Z+1 Beijing will continue to bring to you the solo show in Beijing after October.

This solo show is a retrospective that collects more than forty works of the artist throughout more than ten years, present to you the crucial threads of thought and contexts of the artists body of work.

‘’Does everything that exists simply exist because we believe in it?‘’

One of the most precious qualities of an artist is the ability to think and create. Feng Shuo, an artist who contemplates and creates in silence, crafts scenes in his paintings that, whether they depict people or animals, showcase distorted postures and a depressed, narcissistic demeanor, resembling an inverted dream. These images, which have accompanied him over the years, feature characters that seem like family, constantly changing roles in the cycle of life.

What we firmly believe in might be contradictory. It is this contradiction that raises questions and prompts thought. Great artworks can deliver a unique impact, and contradictory thoughts can open up new realms.

Contradiction allows us to see different versions of ourselves, leading to harmony and sincerity after the resolution of these contradictions. Such contemplation, known as doubt in Buddhism, is crucial for thinking and belief, forming a core progressive force in the universe.

Feng Shuo's paintings offer a space for thought, where everyone can find their own interpretations and engage in dialogue with his works. His "daydreams" are abstract yet strikingly heartfelt. His painting technique reveals a profound foundation and fluid sculpting ability, bringing dynamic layers to his works.

Feng Shuo's daily life, described as serene and untroubled, perhaps allows him to maintain a pure and clear perspective. I recall in 2008, while I was the Chinese representative for the Marlborough Gallery in New York, Feng Shuo encountered Paula Rego at his solo exhibition in Marlborough's SOHO gallery. Despite the language barrier, there was mutual admiration through their works.

Feng Shuo's painting language is powerful and unique. I believe that a deeper layer in his works is love, as the existence of love is boundless. Perhaps in his works, he presents us with a completely different dimension of existence.
